When you're specifying a mold base, the structure you pick drives everything downstream — parting line layout, ejection strategy, cycle time, and tooling cost. The two-plate (A/B plate) design remains the workhorse for simple open-and-shut parts, but it has limits. Once you're dealing with multi-cavity layouts or parts requiring runner stripping, the three-plate variant adds a floating plate to separate the runner from the cavity automatically. In practice, I've seen three-plate tools add 15–25% to mold base cost, but they pay for themselves when you're running small precision parts in high volumes and need reliable degating. The key dimension to watch is the stripper plate travel — it must clear the runner thickness plus a safety margin, typically 5–10 mm.

For thick-wall parts or engineering resins like PC and PA, hot runner systems eliminate runner waste entirely and cut cycle time by 20–40% compared to cold runners. But they're not a drop-in upgrade. You need to account for manifold thermal expansion — roughly 0.02–0.04 mm per 100 mm of manifold length per 100°C temperature rise. Insufficient clearance will bow the manifold and cause leakage at the nozzle tips. On the other side, stack molds (two-level or three-level) can double or triple output from a single press, but they demand precise synchronization of the ejection systems and a taller press daylight. I've seen shops try to fit a stack mold into an existing press without checking the tie-bar spacing and platen stroke — that never ends well.

Standard mold bases from catalog suppliers like LKM, DME, and Hasco cover most two-plate and three-plate needs with lead times measured in days, not weeks. Custom structures — split-cavity, unscrewing, or collapsible-core designs — are where the real engineering hours go. My rule of thumb: if the part geometry allows a standard base with minor modifications, take that route. Reserve custom fabrication for cases where the part truly can't be molded otherwise.
