In stamping, every job boils down to two major categories: separation and forming. Separation covers shearing, blanking, and punching—where the material is cut along a contour. Forming covers bending, drawing, and flanging—where the material plastically deforms without fracture. For mold design and quoting, this distinction matters. A blanking die needs tight punch-die clearance control (typically 5–10% of sheet thickness) and high wear resistance, while a drawing die demands proper draw radii, blank holder force, and surface finish to prevent tearing. The three core operations—blanking, bending, and drawing—each carry their own tooling cost drivers. In practice, always confirm the operation type before quoting. Ask for the part drawing, material grade, thickness, and annual volume. Then map each feature to separation or forming, count the stations, and estimate die life.
