Stamping Process Breakdown: From Separation to Forming in Mold Technology

Stamping is a cold-forming process where a press and die apply external force to sheet, strip, tube, or profile material, causing plastic deformation or separation to achieve the required shape and dimensions. In mold shops, we divide the core operations into two main categories: separation operations such as piercing, blanking, and cut-off; and forming operations such as bending, drawing, flanging, and bulging. Each operation demands its own die structure, clearance setup, and material behavior considerations. For example, in blanking, the cutting clearance typically runs 5% to 10% of sheet thickness. Too much clearance produces heavy burrs on the fracture surface and degrades edge quality; too little clearance accelerates die wear, especially on the punch and die insert edges, shortening tool life and increasing maintenance downtime.
Piercing is another everyday operation where hole wall quality depends directly on clearance direction and die design. If the clearance is applied incorrectly, you get taper, tear-out, or an unacceptable hole surface that fails inspection. When laying out the strip, we must balance material utilization against strip rigidity. A layout that saves material but leaves the strip too weak will cause feeding jams, misalignment, or buckling in the press. In practice, this means adjusting bridge width, edge margin, and pilot hole positions to keep the strip stable through each station. Die designers also need to account for stripper plate pressure, spring selection, and slug evacuation to avoid slug pulling and die damage.
On the forming side, operations like bending, drawing, and flanging introduce springback, thinning, and residual stress that must be compensated in the die geometry. For deep drawing, blank holder force and draw radius are critical to prevent wrinkling and tearing. A well-built die is not just about dimensions—it is about matching clearance, surface finish, and lubrication to the material grade and thickness.
