When a customer asks whether die casting tooling is worth the investment, I usually pull out a simple cost comparison. A typical die casting mold runs $8,000 to $50,000 depending on cavity count, part geometry, and whether you need slides or lifters. Lead time is 4 to 8 weeks, sometimes longer for complex cores. Compare that to sand casting or gravity casting, where tooling might cost $2,000 to $10,000 but cycle times are slower and labor content is higher. The turning point is volume. Below 5,000 pieces annually, die casting rarely makes sense.
