When you sit down to design a mold base, the first decision is always the parting line — it drives everything else. In the 24 typical structures used across the industry, the two-plate (A/B plate) layout remains the workhorse for single-face parts, while three-plate and hot-runner configurations handle multi-cavity or gating-sensitive jobs. The A/B plate thickness must match cavity depth plus support, and you should never skimp on the support plate (B-plate backing) when core pressure exceeds roughly 500 kg/cm². For small precision parts, a standard 2020 or 2525 base with a 2-plate structure and a stripper plate often beats a custom frame in both cost and lead time.

Ejection and cooling are where most designs fail in practice. A typical ejector plate assembly needs at least four guide pins with a clearance of 0.02–0.03 mm on the ejector plate bushings, and return pins must be strong enough to prevent plate deflection under 80–120°C mold temperatures. For cooling, aim for a circuit diameter of 8–12 mm with a pitch of 3–5 times the diameter; baffles or bubblers are mandatory for cores deeper than 50 mm. In the 24 structures, the “slider + lifter” combination is common for internal undercuts, but remember that a slider needs a wear plate and a positive stop — otherwise the mold will flash within 10,000 shots.

Guiding and clamping details separate a good base from a bad one. Use at least four leader pins with hardened bushings, and for molds over 500 mm wide, add a central guide or taper lock. The top clamping plate should be at least 25 mm thick for machines above 150 tons. Also check that the locating ring diameter matches your injection machine’s platen bore — a 100 mm ring on a 110 mm bore will cause misalignment and sprue bushing wear.
