Also, consider the press size: running a 50-ton part on a 150-ton machine because of a deep draw or unscrewing core will increase the hourly rate by 30–40%. Finally, a robust quote should include a sensitivity analysis: what if the material price spikes by 10%? What if the reject rate goes from 0.5% to 2%? These are not academic questions. In my experience, most shops underquote by 8–12% simply because they ignore these variables. The best practice is to build a spreadsheet that separates fixed costs (tooling, setup) from variable costs (material, cycle, labor) and then applies a risk factor based on part complexity and historical scrap data.
