Weather Effects on Mold Production: A Factor Often Overlooked but Always Present

In mold shops, we tend to focus on machine precision, tool steel selection, and CAM programming—but the weather outside the shop floor can quietly sabotage all of that. Temperature swings of even 5–10°C between morning and afternoon cause thermal expansion in both the workpiece and the machine structure. For a 500 mm long mold base made of P20, a 10°C shift translates to roughly 0.06 mm of dimensional change—enough to push a precision insert out of tolerance. High humidity, above 70%, also accelerates rust formation on ground surfaces and can affect the stability of EDM fluids and grinding coolants, leading to inconsistent surface finish and even electrode wear issues.

Seasonal changes are especially problematic for large molds. In winter, cold shop floors cause uneven cooling of thick sections, increasing internal stress and the risk of cracking during heat treatment. In summer, high dew points make it harder to maintain dry air in storage areas, and pre-hardened steel like 718H can develop micro-corrosion pits that show up only after polishing. Many shops ignore these effects until they see unexplained scrap or rework. The practical fix is not exotic—it’s about controlling the environment. Keep the shop at a stable 20–23°C where possible, use dehumidifiers in storage and grinding areas, and let large mold blocks acclimate to shop temperature for at least 24 hours before final machining.

For mold buyers and project managers, weather-related delays are real. A 10-day delivery window can easily stretch by 2–3 days if a sudden rainstorm raises humidity and forces a halt on precision jig grinding or optical measurement.
