Mold Costing Fundamentals: What Every Mold Engineer Must Know Before Quoting

Before any quote leaves your desk, you need to be crystal clear on mold classification. In practice, molds are sorted by structure (two-plate, three-plate, hot runner) and by product application (injection, compression, transfer, or die-casting). Each type carries its own cost drivers. For instance, a standard two-plate cold runner mold for a simple housing part might run 8–12 weeks lead time, while a hot runner system with valve gates can push that to 14–18 weeks and add 20–35% to the tooling price. The cavity count also shifts the math—going from 1×1 to 2×2 typically raises the mold cost by 40–60%, but per-part price drops significantly once volumes exceed 50,000 pieces. Ignoring these structural differences is the fastest way to underquote and lose money on the back end.
When I sit down to build a quote, I break the mold cost into five buckets: design, materials, machining, assembly, and tryout. Steel selection is where most estimators get burned—P20 for prototype runs, S136 or 2316 for corrosive resins, and H13 for high-cavity wear. Machining hours are the biggest variable: a typical 2-cavity mold with slides and lifters might consume 350–500 CNC hours, while a 4-cavity hot runner with unscrewing cores can easily hit 800–1,000 hours. Add 10–15% for assembly and fitting, and don’t forget tryout—three to five shot trials with material and machine time usually add $1,500–$3,000 to the final number.
Finally, never quote without a clear payment schedule and revision policy. Standard practice in the industry is 30–40% down, 30–40% at T1 sample approval, and the balance before mold shipment. But I always build in a clause for engineering changes—anything beyond three minor revisions or any major geometry change after steel cutting gets charged at an hourly rate. This protects you from scope creep that kills margins. Also, factor in your overhead: shop floor space, maintenance, and quality inspection all eat into the quote. A good rule of thumb is to add 10–15% for overhead and profit on top of your direct costs.
